Current CNG Availability and Shortages
The shortage of CNG gas, reaching up to 50%, has led to the unavailability of CNG stations in Punjab and KPK provinces from November 2023 to March 2024.
This gas crisis has worsened due to the non-availability of the required LNG (liquefied natural gas) during the winter season. To address the situation, the government is required to import 12 LNG cargoes each month to meet the demand.
In addition to the scarcity of gas, Punjab province is grappling with a gas crisis caused by low domestic production. As a result, CNG stations in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) will lack LNG supply during the upcoming winter season, further exacerbating the gas shortage in these regions.
What is CNG?
CNG, which stands for compressed natural gas, is a globally utilized, cost-effective alternative to diesel, gasoline, and LPG. Compared to the mentioned fuels, CNG offers several advantages. Firstly, upon ignition, it produces fewer undesirable gases.
Additionally, CNG is corrosion-free and odorless. In the event of a spillage, there is no immediate danger as it disperses into the air.
The production process involves compressing natural gas until it reduces to just 1% of its original volume, after which it is stored in durable cylinders. CNG is distributed to the market from these cylinders and made available to consumers.
Additionally, general industries and Kepto Power will also experience a temporary halt in their gas supply on a specific date. Let’s delve into the details of this schedule.
- Closure of CNG Stations: Starting February 3, 2023, SNGPL & SSGC have implemented a three-day closure of all CNG stations. This move aims to redirect the gas supply towards domestic consumers, prioritizing their needs during this period. As a result, CNG-powered vehicles will temporarily be unable to access fuel from these stations.
- RLNG Stations Affected: Alongside CNG stations, re-liquefied natural gas (RLNG) stations will also be impacted by the temporary closure. Consumers who rely on RLNG as an alternative fuel source will experience a disruption in their supply. This measure is necessary to ensure uninterrupted gas availability for residential users during the specified period.
- Gas Supply to Domestic Consumers: The primary objective behind the closure of CNG and RLNG stations is to secure an adequate gas supply for domestic consumers. By temporarily ceasing operations at CNG and RLNG stations, SSGC and SNGPL aim to meet the increased demand for gas during this particular period. This step reflects the company’s commitment to ensuring the comfort and well-being of households relying on natural gas for various domestic needs.
- Impact on General Industries and Kepto Power: On February 5, 2023, SSGC & SNGPL will extend the temporary suspension of gas supply beyond CNG and RLNG stations. This means that general industries and Kepto Power will also experience a cessation of gas supply on that date. The decision to halt gas provision to these sectors for a specific duration is part of SNGPL’s broader strategy to ensure uninterrupted gas availability to domestic consumers.
